The October 2010 Scientific American has a number of interesting articles. The article by Hall explores new paradigms for the genotype-phenotype relationship. The importance of  multiple  rare (very low frequency) genes and the combinatorial interactions (synergies and antagonisms) and epigenetic phenomena is suggested. This is motivated by the limited explanatory capabality of genome wide association studies for major diseases. These studies have clearly provided major physiological insights. The article suggests there is fertile ground in the large space of what they have not explained. The importance of detailed phenotype characterisation, gene networks and epigenetics is discussed.
