Switches and lights

Posted by ubpdqn on February 17, 2012

The return to the real world has been interspersed with nice moments. A young colleague posed  a puzzle to me.

There are two  adjacent  windowless rooms connected by  door . One room has three switches.  The other room has three identical light bulbs mounted on the wall.  The switches are in one to ine correspondence to the light bulbs.  You cannot simultaneously see the switches and the bulbs.

You are allowed to put the switches on or off and  then with only one entry of the room with the bulbs determine which switch turns on which bulb.

How can you accomplish this?

A solution is here. Others are welcome.
