Negotiating the jagged edge with your index finger

In   How many bumpsI reproduce the solution provided by Professor Blitzstein to a Putnam combinatorial problem in lecture 10 of his STAT100 course.

It illustrates the power of indicator variables in combinatorial problems. I cannot help being awed by the way the problem melts away after the insight to use this approach is formed.
